A Watch That's More Than a Screen
Apple Watch has a bit of a boredom problem. If you've upgraded every year since Series 7, you know the drill: a slightly brighter screen, a thinner bezel, a new chip name, and a health metric you might use twice a year. The Guardian of Cupertino has been polishing the same square slab for over a decade. Last year, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman called it a "mini iPhone on your wrist."
But change is finally on the horizon. Reports say Apple's industrial design team has spent the last year rethinking the entire Apple Watch lineup. We're talking screenless bands, smart rings, different display shapes, cheaper models, even a premium tier above the Ultra. They've considered circular faces, too. While Series 12 and Ultra 4 will likely be routine updates—a decent performance bump and a ceramic case—Apple knows it can't squeeze endless upgrades out of the same old rectangle.
The Screen Is the Problem
The screen was there from the start. In 2015, The New Yorker detailed how Apple originally wanted a device for checking notifications and messages. The square face made sense for lists. The Digital Crown solved the pinch-to-zoom nightmare on a tiny display. Twelve years later, the company is finally admitting that some people might not want a screen at all.
Why? Because Apple Watch has become a jack-of-all-trades: calls, texts, maps, transit passes, heart rate alerts, AFib detection. But with great power comes great battery anxiety. To get "all-day" health tracking, you're supposed to wear it to bed, which means you're constantly hunting for charging windows—during a shower, while brushing your teeth, before you pass out. The device meant to reduce health anxiety becomes a source of it.
Rise of the Screenless
That's where the Oura ring and Whoop band come in. They stripped away the screen, ditched the notifications, and focused on one thing: continuous, low-friction health data. Their growth has been explosive—smart ring shipments up 49% year-over-year, AI glasses up 110%, while the overall smartwatch market crawls at single digits. These products prove a brutal point: for pure health tracking, the screen is a liability, not a feature.
So Apple is reportedly exploring screenless wearables. But here's the thing: removing the screen is easy. The hard part is what happens next.
Data Without a Dashboard
Open the Health app on your iPhone. It's a treasure trove of numbers—HRV, resting heart rate, sleep stages—but it's about as comprehensible as a dense lab report. Apple shows you the data but never tells you what it means. Is a 5% drop in HRV a sign to rest or a green light to run? Apple stays silent.
Whoop, on the other hand, packages all that into a daily "Recovery Score." Oura gives you three readiness scores. Third-party apps like ChatGPT Health will read your Apple Health data and explain it in plain English. They're translating raw data into actionable advice. That's the last mile Apple hasn't nailed.
AI Becomes the New Interface
Without a screen, the interaction model flips. You can't tap, swipe, or scroll. The system has to talk to you. Voice, sensors, and AI become the interface. This is where Apple's recent moves make sense.
Bloomberg reported that Eddy Cue, now in charge of health, plans to fold some AI health coach features into the Health app. Apple's job postings reveal they're hiring for spatial computing, wearables, and health, with one explicitly looking for engineers to integrate LLM agents into health and fitness prototypes. They're building an AI-powered health coach that can say, "Hey, you had poor deep sleep last night and your resting heart rate is up. Maybe swap that HIIT session for a walk."
The Ethical Sourcing Angle
Here's what nobody's talking about: a screenless Apple Watch would be a massive shift in how Apple sources materials. Screens are one of the most resource-intensive components in any device. They require rare earth elements, indium, and energy-hungry manufacturing. Removing them could shrink Apple's carbon footprint per device and reduce its reliance on conflict minerals.
But it's not that simple. A ring or band might still need sensors, batteries, and wireless chips. The question is whether Apple will double down on recycled materials and ethical mining. They've made promises about becoming carbon neutral by 2030, and a screenless device could be a golden opportunity to lead, not just follow.
Yet, the supply chain for health sensors isn't exactly clean. Cobalt in batteries, tantalum in capacitors, gold in circuit boards—these often come from artisanal mines with questionable labor practices. If Apple goes screenless, they'll need to ensure their new materials don't prop up human rights abuses.
What It Means for the Consumer
For buyers, a screenless Apple Watch could mean a cheaper, lighter, more comfortable device that lasts days on a charge. But it also means trusting AI to interpret your body's signals. That's a big ask. The device becomes less of a gadget and more of a partner.
The real test is whether Apple can make the invisible feel indispensable. Oura and Whoop have shown it's possible. Now the question is whether Apple, with its design DNA and ecosystem lock-in, can do it better—and whether it can do it without trading one set of ethical problems for another.

For consumers, that could mean a more natural, less intrusive way to track health. For the planet, it's a chance to cut down on e-waste and resource extraction.
